What are the Plastic Washers?

Washers are one of the most commonly used hardware products. The uses of washers are several including chemical, thermal, electrical and commercial processes. The washers due to its versatile capabilities can be made of different materials depending upon the intended purpose. The material can be aluminum, copper, bronze, fiber and many other different varieties of material. A hole is located in the middle of the washer which allows a fastener to be easily fixed into the washer. These are designed in such a manner so as to distribute the pressure of a nut/bolt over the surface. Washers are generally used to fasten the nut/bolt to prevent it from loosening under the vibratory circumstances.

Types of Washers

The washers can be classified in the following three types

Plain Washers: spread a load and prevents the damage which might be caused to the surface.

Spring Washers: these have axial flexibility which is used for preventing fastening or loosening caused as a result of vibrations.

Locking Washers: These are also spring washers which are also used for preventing fastening or loosening by preventing unscrewing rotation of the fastening device.

Corrosion Resistance There are various techniques which are used to enhance the corrosion resistance properties of washers, which are discussed below:

Metallic Coating: the typical coatings used to create the corrosion resistance in washers are Cadmium, Zinc and Nickel. Cadmium provides a very high quality protective surface but at the same time it is toxic both biologically as well as environmentally.

Electroplating: In this method, washer is coated with electrolytic deposition by the use of chromium or silver metal.

Phosphating: A resilient, but abrasive surface is formed by adding zinc-phosphate layer in addition to corrosion-protective oil.

Bluing or Browning: Exposing the washer (typically steel) to a chemical compound or alkali salt solution causes an oxidizing chemical reaction, which results in the creation of a corrosion-resistant, colored surface and the integrity of the coating can improved by treating the finished product with a water-displacing oil.

Chemical Plating: nickel phosphor alloy is precipitated upon the surface of the washer, resulting in creation of an extremely corrosion resistant surface.

Flat washer has large outer diameter and it has central hole. They are used to spread the load on thin sheet metal, and are named after their use on automobile fenders. They can also be used to make a connection to a hole that has been enlarged by rust or wear.
