Balustrades are the vertical legs on the railings which are made up of the wood, iron and some other material like stone and stainless steel etc. The Balustrade is used in interior part of the house in between the railings. These Balustrades are supported by the Baluster posts. The Balustrade is joined by Baluster posts together as a unit. People can also install balustrades in their pool areas and garden area.

A Balustrade or Baluster can be placed outside the house or in the exterior part of the house i.e in the porch, terrace or balcony. The word Balustrade has come from the French dictionary which means pomegranate flower from its shape.

Evolution of Balustrades: Balusters or Balustrades were first visible in between the 7th and 13th century’s B.C. It came into the picture from the ancient bas-reliefs or the sculptural murals. These are the representation of Assyrian palaces which can be observed by lining the windows. They did not appear in between the Greek and Roman Eras and previously were used in the Italian palaces. Moreover, Spanish people designed the structure in the Italian Renaissance period. Now you can find these balustrades in every corner of the world and homeowners and businessmen install these balustrades in their respective areas as a protective guard.

Types of material used in building a Balustrade: Balustrades can be made up of different material and it takes time and patience to select and design the perfect balustrade for the interior or exterior decoration of the house. Safety should be taken into consideration prior constructing a balustrade. It is dependent upon the choice and requirement while deciding and constructing a balustrade.

  1. The material used in designing a balustrade and handrail are cast iron, Polyurethane, cast stone, plaster, polymer stone, brass, and bronze are also used in making the balustrade and baluster.

  2. The Handrail is made up of wood and modern buildings have Polyurethane as they meet the design of the structure. You can find the glass balustrades also which are designed with transparent glasses and they can enhance the beatification of your home.

  3. The materials like Brass and Bronze require regular cleaning and shining by rubbing it periodically.

  4. Wood is also used in the design of the balustrades and handrails but the wood should be well seasoned and should not have a property of warping.


There are 7 types of balustrades used in the designing the interior of the house:


  1. Stainless Steel: Stainless Steel is consistently used in constructing the balustrades which are the most durable and versatile type. These balustrades can take different shapes like rounded or square steel. These balustrades can be the decorative and ornate steel can be made of timber handrail.

  2. Wood: Mostly the wooden type of balustrade is used in the construction. These balustrades can be carved into various designs.

  3. Stone: The Stone technique of building walls and buildings is the most expensive technique. There are two ways of building which are carving and casting. If the best quality stone is available then it can be made into marble upon the request.

  4. Polymer: Polymer balustrade is the balustrade which gives similar look as the stone balustrade but is crafted with cheap and lasting material as compared to stone. These rails are designed from synthetic stone which is generated from limestone dust, resin and polymer resin.

  5. Polyurethane: These balustrades are more popular among them all. They are strong and durable and are cost effective.

  6. Vinyl: This is the most decent and low-maintenance choice of the balustrade.

  7. Glass: The Glass Balustrade is the most graceful type of balustrade to the home interiors as well as exteriors. They are the most stylish type of balustrades with more visibility and easy cleaning process. So now you can choose any material according to your choice and budget.
