Planting Gardens with Planter Boxes

If you live in an apartment or a small house with no large yard, but maybe just a little extra space or a small balcony, then planter boxes are the answer that you have been searching for to grow a garden in a small area – just a few square feet is all that you need. And because these boxes can be placed at a height, gardening becomes a little easier for you. Here we will tell you all about how to set up planter boxes and get your garden going…

Building a Planter Box Items Needed Here is what you will need to build a planter box:

  1. Saw

  2. Shovel

  3. 4-inch long nails

  4. 10-inch wide planks

  5. Hammer

  6. Pea gravel

  7. High-quality topsoil

  8. Plant Supports

  9. Organic compost

Building Procedure Let us take it step by step:

  1. Cut out two wooden planks of 10-inch width each using a saw. Two of them should be four feet in length and the other two should be 8 inches to build a standard planter box. You can tweak the plank length if you want a larger or smaller one.

  2. In your garden, dig up about four inches of soil in the area where you want to place the planter box.  Place the planks inside this dug up area to form a rectangle.

  3. Fill in some of the soil you had dug up earlier around the rim of the planter box to plug any gaps and hold the box in its place.

  4. Fill two inches of pea gravel inside the planter box for proper drainage and to prevent weeds from growing.

  5. Use a soil mixture that has a 3:1 ratio of top soil and organic compost. Rest the soil for two weeks before you plant anything in it.

  6. Use the planter box for planting anything like you would do in a regular garden bed. Does that sound easy? Let us talk a little more about how you can set up that perfect garden in planter boxes. The Soil to Use Use potting soil that has been specially prepared for planter boxes. We recommend not using the normal garden soil because it will not drain properly. Mix the soil with organic compost to give your plants a head start. You can later apply liquid fertilizer as well. The Site to Use Choose a site that gets sunlight at least seven to eight hours each day, particularly if you are growing a vegetable. Also you will need easy access to water. The Plants Planter boxes are compact, so you need to choose plants that are compact type. You can experiment a little and make your gardening more exciting and fun! The Time to Plant If you live in an area that gets frost, then plant after the frost date has passed. If you are planting seeds, you can use the instructions on the seed packet to guide you. Crops that can handle cold weather can be planted earlier. The Watering and Fertilizing You will need to check the moisture level from time to time. Use your finger to check the wetness of the soil. It should be wet but no water logging should be there. Water only when the soil is a little dry. During summer, you may need to water daily. After the initial granular fertilizer, regularly apply liquid fertilizer as per the instructions on the package. Gardening takes time, and planter boxes garden can really flower and fruit well, if you take the proper. Don’t let concrete structures scare you off the green way but use planter boxes to be the best gardener you can!
