Everything You Need to Know About Bifold Hinges

Bifold hinges are basically a type of hinge that allows a panel or door to open in a single direction or both directions. These two hinges can be of same or varying lengths and have multiple pivoting points to facilitate a wide degree of movement with a smooth stress-free swing. There are many bifold hinges that are commercially available in the market today. This provides you with several options and models to choose from. It can be quite confusing to determine which is a perfect fit for a particular job. To help you decide easily, we have given a short description of the different types of bifold hinges that you can get.

D handle hinges: These hinges are used in bi-fold doors in the intermediate panels. They can be placed either at the center or at the edge of the door, to allow freedom of movement.

Bi-fold door butt hinges: This type of hinge is used in groups or series in the bi-fold door. This hinge is highly versatile, durable and extremely weather resistant. They are mostly made of materials like stainless steel or brass.

Intermediate pivot hinges: This keeps the central part of the door aligned with the top and bottom hinges. They provide perfect alignment and hence are widely used to add a little aesthetics to the room.

Where to get bi-fold door hinges?

All you need to do to get a bi-fold hinge is to visit the nearby hardware store in your area. If you do not find the required hinge there, then you can straight away shop online for it. There are various websites that give you a variety of hinges to choose from. You can pick the one that suits your need best. Some of these sites also have fixing and installation services. So, you can call up these professionals to get your bi-fold hinge installed.

Steps to install a bi-fold door hinge

It is not always necessary to call up a professional for this simple installation. If you are willing to take up some work by yourself, then you can always fix these hinges with a little help. So, if you are a part of such do-it-yourself category, read on to find out how you can do this on your own.

Step 1: Mark the position where you are going to place the hinge. As a thumb rule, for most doors the markings can be at 11” from the bottom, 7” from the top, and a midway marking between these two for every panel. But this is just a guideline and can vary from door to door. Or just look for the old hinge holes in similar doors and just replicate and mark them in your new door.

Keep in mind that both doors in the bi-fold should have symmetrical hinges if they have to fit perfectly. So, make sure that you mark both the doors at the same time to maintain uniformity in markings and prevent fitting issues.

Step 2: Remember that the order of placement of hinges is very crucial. Always start with the lower hinge. Fix this against the marks made previously. Check if the marks that are made, coincide with the hinge holes. If it does, then start drilling into these markings. Even while drilling, start with the lowermost hole and then proceed upwards. Tighten it with screws. At every stage of the drilling, recheck the alignment of the holes.

Step 3: After the bottom hinge is done, go for the middle and top hinges. Again, follow the same procedure for these hinges also. Finally, join your bifold door panels together. That’s it!
